All i did was download it, double click the file and followed the instructions. :-)

Figures. The part about no support, no refund, I mean.

The file you downloaded is (should be) in ZIP format. It should be named either OOo_1.1.4_Win32Intel_install.zip or OOo_2.0beta2_Win32Intel_install.zip. WinXP has a built-in utility to open these compressed files so it should have taken care of that part without effort from you. Maybe something was corrupted during the download.

I've never used BitTorrent, so I can't offer help with that. However, generically, you need to confirm that you downloaded one of the two files named above. Then, go back to the OOO download page and fetch the MD5 checksums and the instructions for using them in order to be certain the file you set out to download is the one that is actually on your computer. If all of that checks out, then one of the list members who is more knowledgeable about WinXP than I can probably lead you through the rest of it. I quit sending money to Redmond with Win98.

Oh, and please respond only to the list address.

Regards,
Doug

They don't respond to requests for assistance so I would not expect a refund either. I tried your suggestion. Downloaded something called Bit Torrent then a file from the open office list for windows x86. Windows Xp does not recognize the file type and cannot open it. I'm lost and confused. The $25 will buy only 20 litres of gas so I am not out much.

Hi Ed:

If they won't support their CD, ask for your money back.
Then, go to the OOo website (http://www.openoffice.org), select the Download tab, and get the program without charge. If you don't have a broadband service, the download can take quite a long time. Save yourself a lot of headaches, and install one of the download managers that are also linked on the page.

Come back and tell us how you're doing.

Doug

I bought a CD of openoffice from GA Computer Sciences Inc. It does not work at all ie computer does not even recognize the presence of CD (another does though). Have contacted them for assistance. Not had any reply. Is there a better (or any)support service for this product?
