Actually, THE problem is that OOo shouldn't be re-associating MS file

otherwise just leave it alone.
I would agree if OOo didn't give you a choice during setup. ANY program
that takes over file associations *without asking* is usually on its way
to being UN-installed.
But the setup process for OOo requires that users specifically check the
MS Office file types. The default is an unchecked box (though I think
HTML editing option is checked - doesn't affect MS Office file
associations).
Others have weighed in on this issue more eloquently, but perhaps
another line or two *on the screen where the checkboxes are* would go a
long way toward alleviating this problem. I know it's difficult to make
changes that are ultimately accommodating people's inability
(unwillingness) to read instructions, but if enough people are having
the same problem, then you either make a change or start screaming about
the stupidity of the world and have a breakdown. (There may be other
choices).
How about something that simply states:
"By checking these boxes, OOo will open these files when double-clicked.
If you plan on continuing to use MS Office to open these file types,
consider leaving the checkboxes alone. OOo will still work fine leaving
these checkboxes unchecked - it is not required."
- OR -
Might also consider another setup box that is triggered when one or more
MS Office file association boxes are checked. That way, a new box would
come up, explaining what is about to happen (file assoc) and allow the
user to confirm that choice or go back and uncheck boxes.
