Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately the problem is still there but
I'm living with it. It really has me intrigued that I'm the only person
in the OO world with the problem. However I'm hopeful that one day I'll
wake up and it will be all sorted and I'll be able to spend more time
teaching my pigs some advanced formation flying.

No problems for me on XP SP2 with Beta2. Menus work fine, and if a list is
longer than the screen (as for fonts) the menu has arrows top and bottom
to navigate through. Looks good.
