Can anybody tell me how the row and column behavior settings in Tools >
Option > OpenOffice.org Writer > Table are supposed to work?

I don't mean the explanations from the on-line help. I mean how to
manipulate tables so that the differences between fixed, fixed
proportional and variable are obvious when you add or delete columns.

I've tried on several versions of OOo, both on Linux and Windows, and,
from what I can see, tables behave as though the setting were fixed no
matter what the setting actually is.

It seems to me that either the settings don't work or else I'm missing
something so basic that I'm overlooking it.

Can anybody enlighten men?

Thanks,
