Typically I would hate arguing with G. Roderick :-), but holding the mouse button for 5 seconds is not really necessary. (I am using OOo Beta 2 129 on WinXp). But I understand where you are coming from having converted from MS Office to OOo myself. Things just work a bit differently in OOo. (Not better, not worse, just differently. Except for Base, definitely better.) For Writer: Highlight the text you want to move. Put your cursor over the text and press the left mouse button. Contrary to MS Office, the cursor does not change, so it looks that nothing is happening. (But looks are deceptive :-) ) Now drag the highlighted text to where ever you want to move it to. For Cut and Paste just release the left mouse button For Copy and Paste hold down the Ctrl key and release the left mouse button. (This is also different from MS where you have to hold down the Ctrl key *during* the drag, iso OOo where you press and hold it *just before* you release the mouse button at the destination. For Calc: Similar to Writer for a range of cells, but for a single cell you have to grab the cell and drag it two cells away and back, then release the mouse button. Then press the left mouse button again on the cell and the rest is as before. (The motivation for this I understand is to prevent accidental dragging of a single cell. No use to debate the merits of this motivation. It's the way it is and not difficult to get use to.) For Base: Now here D&D is absolutely great. Let's say you have a spreadsheet with column names and lots of rows and you want to move them to a table in Base. Make sure that both your database and spreadsheet are open. Highlight all the rows you want to copy to a table and make sure you include the row with the column headings. Drag the highlighted area to the Table icon in Base and drop it. Base will ask you for a table name and voila, you just created a new table with the contents of the spreadsheet. For this type of drag between two applications you might have to drag to the task bar first, hover over the Base application icon until it opens and then drag it to the Table icon. (I just love this one because I am a simple end user. There are still a lot of techies that do the same by writing a script, but let them have some as well :-) ) Just experiment a bit, once you get used to it it's very comfortable.
