OpenOffice 2.0 beta or any of the 1.9.xx development versions now
support the Open Document Format (or Oasis)

They are also fully compatible with prior versions of Openoffice. If
you open a sxw file with the latest OpenOffice, you will be queried if
you wish to upgrade to Oasis when saving/closing the file.
It will be given a new extension.
