[users] Works Spreadsheets

I have a number of spreadsheets made with the Microsoft Works program suite.  I 
cannot open them with OpenOffice. I always ger a window asking for ASCII filter 
options.  Clicking on that I get a text document with one line of gibberish.  
Is there a way to avoid this and use the spreadsheets?
