You have to change the column display format for that.
Select the column, choose Format -> Cells. In Numbers leaf there are
lots of different formats. Choose Date, change format code to NNNN.
That should do the trick.
I changed the column format in a new chart to date format and it still
displays as a number.

You have to enter DDD in the "Format Code/User Defined" custom
formatting to get a day displayed (make sure Date is selected in
"Category").
