Thanks for your prompt reply. I should have said that I have windoze set to show file extensions (Hiding file extensions is a known security risk!). When I try to open a file saved without taking care to put in the file extension I get the usual dialogue telling me the windoze doesn't know what progam is meant to open it. I think this excludes the hidden file extension theory!
