My suggestion does work, but I do not use the AutoFill my self.
Make sure you have a sort list defined for the alphabet sequence.
Once that is defined (Tools -> Options -> OOo Calc -> Sort Lists)
you can start your sequence a,b,c etc and then simply drag it
out to get the rest.
