Long time ago, in a far distant office suite, I had a little macro for
inserting digraphs (s.k.a. diphthongs) and greek characters. The macro
took a wee while to set up but once complete it resided as a toolbar and
a single click did the jobbie!
I still haven't cracked macros in OOo but would be willing to help
anyone who has.

Small correction: for Linux go to Help -> Index -> Insert (easier: Menu:
Insert -> Special Character)

I downloaded OpenOffice to my Windows98 operating system. When creating an
equation in WordPerfect, I can insert a Greek symbol by spelling it (e. g.,
omega) instead of going to a table, clicking on the symbol and inserting it,
which would be extremely cumbersome. Can I do the same thing in
OpenOfficeMath?
yes you can. Please see Help > Contents > Index > Search term > Greek
symbols in formulas
