Yes, I did save it as that file type before emailing it. I had checked Automatic File Extension and also typed .doc after the file name However I have just done a test by writing text in OOwriter, saving it as above and emailing it. This was opened successfully by the recipient. I am wondering if the prolem is with the original doc I am trying to mail. It is something that was created perhaps 4 years ago in a (I don't know which) version of Word and been modified several times since in Word 97.     But this question still remains: When you saved the file, did you
use this file type? "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)" Also, if you
emailed the document (I don't remember), did you save it this way
before you sent the document? Either one of these could be the problem.
