Sounds like a stuck backspace key to me.

The most likely cause for this is you've accidentally pressed the
"Insert" key on your keyboard so that it is now overwriting instead of
inserting new text. You can check this in OO by looking at the bottom
of the window. In the middle it should say INSRT not OVER. To fix it,
just press the "Insert" key again.
