There sure is, but it depends on the version that your using as to where it is located.
In versions numbered 1.X.X it is found under file > statistics (or something similar). One of the tabs has the word count for the entire document. In 2.0 versions, it is under the 'tools' menu option. In any regards, if you search for 'word count' in the built in help files you will get additional direction.
