I have to admit I did not know that in order to use File -> Open in Calc
to open a delimited file, you must specify its format as Text CSV
(*.csv, *.txt). This seems rather strange but then again I'm sure there
is a good reason for it. Its even more tricky since if the file has
extension .upl you must first select the file then specify its extension
as Text CSV. Thank you again for your help,

I do not understand. If you select Text CVS as the filetype, you
should
be able to open _any_ delimited file in Calc. If you do not bother to
do
this selection, then OOo will open in Writer. So is the problem that
you want automatic recognition and aren't getting it or that you and
your users are unaware of that they must specify the filetype. Please
explain. If it is the former, suggest that you enter an Request for
Enhancement (RFE) into Issue
Tracker as this is the best way to have requests such as this
evaluated.

If you haven't already registered, do the following:

     1. To file an issue you must register with OOo by clicking the
My Pages tab and selecting the Register link
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/Join
     2. Fill in your information
     3. Reply to the confirmation email that will be sent to the
address
        you provided.
     4. Once you have confirmed, go to www.openoffice.org again
     5. And click on the "My Pages" tab from which you can file and
find
issues.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. It is important that you
file
any examples with the issue to ensure your need is understood.
