The devs hated the linux code for the installer and decided to go this

Running alien is NOT a big deal - since about build 120 (I think) I
haven't needed to do any of the tweaks that were required around the
first beta release.  It works fine - you get the packages tailored to
your machine - they run well AND they are seen by the default package
manager for the distro then.  No worries...
