The problem is solved. Not sure if anyone else has encountered this, but I'll share the (very simple) solution in case someone has. I suggested to my co-worker that she could try deleting the alignment tools from the toolbar, and then re-inserting them. She did and now they work fine. Not sure what caused the problem in the first place, but she's back in business now. Thanks.
