The problem is solved. Not sure if anyone else has encountered this, but  
I'll share the (very simple) solution in case someone has. I suggested to my  
co-worker that she could try deleting the alignment tools from the toolbar, and 
 
then re-inserting them. She did and now they work fine. Not sure what caused 
the  problem in the first place, but she's back in business now. Thanks.

Hi Dick,
This sounds strange, can  you install OOo 1.1.5 to see if the problem 
persists ?
