Many thanks for your prompt reply. The thesaurus does not function when I
open a document which was written originally with MS Word. However, it
functions when I use Openoffice to create new documents. I did try
pasting the text from the old document into a new Openoffice document.
However, as soon as I did so the thesaurus function again turned off. I
don't think it is worth going to any more trouble over such a small
problem as all the documents in the computer have only a short lifespan
and in a matter of months they will be replaced with documents written
with Openoffice.
Best wishes

Hi Gerald
A bit more info would help (OOo version and OS for starters).
Does this happen when you open a previously saved document or when you
restart the program? If the latter, you need to save a template with the
settings you want and set that as default.
Did you know there is a Australian dictionary also. It will install via
the File-Wizards-Install New Dictionaries.
