Dear Sir / Madam,
I have just downloaded and installed OpenOffice.
Few days later, I opened (by double clicking on) an Excel file.
To my horror, the file opened in OpenOffice.
To my horror, the icon changed.
I did not specify nor did I ask this file to be opened in OpenOffice.
You didn't say anything about what verson or operating system you are
using. I just installed the latest version of OpenOffice on my Windows
XP machine. During the installation, I was asked if I wanted to open MS
files in Open Office.
If you didn't get that option either something was wrong with your
installation or you missed it. Another option is that in some other
version on some other operating sytem perhaps you aren't offered a
choice but with the latest version on Windows XP you are offered the option.
Yes, I know I can "force the issue" by using the "Open with", but this is
ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.
I never asked nor specify OpenOffice to be the default application.
I never asked nor specify OpenOffice to "hijack" the MS files.
MS files (Word, Excel, etc.) should open using MS software, unless, of course,
if I specify otherwise!!!
I have invited OpenOffice to my "house" as a "guest". A guest should behave,
otherwise I show it the door!!!.
Out of no choice, I have uninstalled OpenOffice.
I just would like to hope that by un-installing it no troublesome remnant
stayed behind.
Yes, I would like to re-download and re-install OpenOffice, BUT first, I must
know how to avoid the problem.
If you decide to reinstall, look at each screen carefully just to be
sure you don't by pass the options you are looking for.

Your help would be much appreciated in solving this problem.
Could you pls help me, and let me know how to make sure that MS files will
continue to open with MS.
Pls understand, I work from home using my private computer. I send my work to the office and I do not want an OpenOffice file to get there.
I SHALL BE FIRED FOR THAT!!!!
MY EMPLOYER MAY EVEN SUE ME FOR DAMAGES!!!
Thank for yr hlp
Sam
