For starters I would suggest reading the use guide - it has lots of information about database connectivity, etc... : http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/
However what you are asking can be done. Open the database explorer (select F4) simply drag the names of the database columns to the desired position in the writer document. This will put field placeholders in your document. To view the data instead of the field placeholders, select the data base row that you want, then the icon "data to fields". The fields will be replaced with the actual data that is in the database row. This is obviously cumbersome if there is more than a couple of rows you want inserted. As you have already identified, mail merge would be the next best thing if there was many rows to be inserted.
