I wasn't the originator of this thread, but I did some experimentation to see what I found regarding PDF file size. I have a 12-page newsletter with about 10 photos or other jpg graphics which I put into PDF format to send to the printer. Here is the file size summary:

OOo 1.1.4 with highest resolution ("Press" quality): 1.9 MB
OOo 2.0 with highest resolution ("lossless"): 37 MB
OOo 2.0 with JPG check, at 100%: 20 MB
OOo 2.0 with JPG at 80%: 6.5 MB
OOo 2.0 with JPG at 60%: 4 MB
OOo 2.0 with JPG at 40%: 3 MB
OOo 2.0 with JPG at 40%, and 300 DPI specified: 1 MB
OOo 2.0 with JPG at 40% and 75 DPI: 360 KB
OOo 2.0 with JPG at 100% and 300 DPI: 6 MB

So you can basically choose what file size you want; anywhere (in my trials) from 360 KB to 37 MB (two orders of magnitude).

As expected, image quality correlates very well to file size. The larger file sizes above were superior to the "press" quality in 1.1.4, although the differences were only apparent at a 400% magnification. I would say that OOo 2.0 with JPG quality set to 40% was roughly comparable in quality to OOo 1.1.4 "press" quality.

I look at this as a positive for 2.0, once you get familiar with the settings. You can achieve higher image quality that was available in 1.1.4, at the tradeoff of larger file sizes. But you can still get small file sizes if you want.

Hi Richard,

Has anyone else noticed that .pdfs exported from .odt are 5 times or so bigger than those exported from .sxw? That is, a 15kb file saved as a .sxw will export a 70kb or so .pdf, while the same file saved as a .odt exports almost 400kb.
Why is this?
Is it fixable, because I don't want to clog up clients' mailboxes with .pdf attachments.
And is there a better place than here to ask this question?

That is unknown to us (QA & developers).

Can you please send your two documents (sxw & odt) to Hasan ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) please? You may do this either directly or by filing an issue and adding those documents as attachments. And also please specifiy how you converted one into the other (I guess the sxw was "saved as" odt though).

Thanks in advance!
Thomas
