Nothing in the known world reads works files, not even other Microsoft
products. Although there are some stand alone conversion products on
the net- if you have a lot of files to convert this may be the way to
go-- do a search for "works file conversion utility" or something
similar.

Otherwise, the simplest solution is to open them in works and then
convert them to something like Rich Text Format for word processing
docs and comma separated values for spreadsheets. These can then be
opened directly by Open Office.

This illustrates the value of Open Office and other open source
projects- the formats of the files are available for people to be able
to produce conversion methods and import filters.
