You probably want to try 1.5 first. It used to be that you NEEDED 1.4.x,
but I heard that with the 2.0 final release, you need 1.5. Based on
this, I setup to use 1.5 with no problems on both windows and Linux.
Prior to 2.0 final release, I had problems with anything but 1.4x

If you are trying to open a data source using jdbc - obviously the
correct java connectors are required as well as an appropriate JRE.
The JRE can be obtained from here :
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html
If you are using odbc, again the correct drivers will be required. For
instance if you are trying to connect to mysql using odbc you'll need
to get the correct odbc drivers from here :
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/3.51.html
As to your specific error message - it could be that there are some
additional parameters required before you can open the database. Have
all the required fields been completed?
Little more information is required about what type of database your
trying to connect with, what platform your using, etc...

I have tried downloading what I consider the appropriate Java runtime software
but I get a message saying the software is defective. Any suggestions would be
welcome.
