When I choose the microsoft sans serif font in openoffice, the space is

By the "microsoft sans serif" you mean Arial? If you mean real "MS Sans
Serif", then it is not (and it never has been) TrueType font but some kind
of M$-only bitmapped font (extension of the file .FON). That means when you
select "Sans Serif" as your font you get probably some other font which is
aliased to "Sans Serif" (the same happens if you select most Adobe PS-fonts
like "Helvetica", "Times", or "Courier"). If it is non-TTF font, then it
really doesn't work well with antialising. What is your desktop -- Gnome or
KDE (just to now, which tools to use to find out more)?

Use "Arial", "Times New Roman", "Courier New", etc. which are M$ names of
the fonts when you do not want aliases (or rather install dejavu free font
and use "DejaVu Sans Condensed", which is much more pretty :-)).

No, I have a real microsoft sans serif true type font in my windows partition. The file name is micross.ttf. The main reason I want the microsoft font files is to have better Microsoft Word compatibility (I receive sometimes document in M$ Word). But Thanks for the tip, I will look at the dejavu font files.
