Using 1.4.2 may or may not cause problems with creating a simple
phone-book database. I would recomment you download and install the 1.5
version of java.
You again ask how to create this database. Have you read the Getting
Started with Base chapter that I mentioned in an earlier email to this list
in reply to your earlier email? Again, it is available from this web page:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/index.html.
In the "OOoAuthors Guides" section for OpenOffice.org 2.x section on that
page is the hyperlink: "List of chapters". Click that link. It will take you
to a web page with a list of all 17 chapters of the Getting Started Guide.
Download the chapter on Base (Getting Started with Base). Following its
instructions you should be able to create the phone-book database you want.

To Users: I NOW have Java 1.5 and have downloaded both Chap. 10 on
creating Databases, plus the entire PDF manual for future use. Sorry, I
am a bit slow on this. What I will probably do, to preclude computer
eraser is print out the manual. Ironically, I own the resource manual on
1,XXX, still!
