When I tried dpkg on the core4u deb package it whinged about libkde4 not being available. It turns out that when I upgraded my system last night there was a major revision of the KDE packages and libkde4 is no longer available, and this is what broke OO! The irony is that I don't use KDE mostly, but just keep it on the system for when I want to try some KDE app. So now I'm running alien again and hopefully that will fix the problem.
