Yes. Just make sure that when you install OpenOffice,
when the dialog box appears asking you if you want
OpenOffice to open Microsoft Word, Excel and
Powerpoint files, make sure you check them.

One warning: If you have MS Office on your computer, doing what Greg
wrote will cause all these MS Office file types to be opened in OOo when
double clicked rather than by MS Office. It will also change the icons of
these files from MS Office icons to OOo icons. If this is not the behavior
you want, do not check any box on that page.
Regardless of whether you check these boxes or not, any of these files
can be opened by either MS Office or OOo by running MS Office or OOo first
and opening the file from within the program: File > Open.
