The X11 version of OOo for Mac runs Fondu to convert Mac fonts to something OOo can use. I suspect that that is the component causing trouble for these users. The porting list is the one with all the Fondu experts, so that is the place to ask for help with it.
I think I ran some kind of font fixer -- but I don't remember which one -- sorry!
If you are running Tiger (10.4), font book has an option to check the fonts and (sometimes) fix them.
