Sharepoint is a M$ product which is basically a document repository.
It offers version control, centralised storage, integrates tightly
with M$ office, collaborative environment. Sharepoint could possibly
be also used for content management, but I've had no experience with
that part of it (if it is offered).

There are plenty of document/content management applications in the
open source world. Below are just a few links:
