I use the stuff that came with my HP (Readiris 9 Pro), have it setup
to will send the recognized text to any application, but you do have
to set that up in Readiris not in the target application. Other than
a 50 page limit I have been pleasantly surprised by how well it works.

Use Insert -> Picture -> Scan -> Request. That should bring up
the HP Director scanning utility.
OK thanks, it works, but only in graphic mode; what I need is to
import a text by OCR!
I need something like "Text -> Scan -> Request.
1. Forget about initiating it from inside OOo. This isn't because
the engineers are incompetent or because of a design oversight, but
rather the OCR program has to produce a compatible file format for
OOo to import. These things are generally designed to output in
Word doc format and to interface with Word directly.
2. I tried to use Director and tell it to scan to ocr with a file
as destination, but not much happened. There may be a problem with
HPs software or (more likely) I just don't know what I'm doing.
