I want to use OOo for a large file - about 1100 pages of mixed text,
endnotes and graphics. I am having trouble.
First noticeable thing is that there often is a flicker in the window
(using XP) about every second or so - not regular. Distracting and
abnormal but livable; no other applications seems to be doing this.
Normal loading time is 57 seconds (My CPU is 2.6 MHz, 1 Gig RAM). Word
perfect loads the equivalent file in eight seconds.
Equivalent means that the files are generated by a third party
application; I can choose either DOC (which I transform to ODT) or WPD.
Saving time: to run the barometer to the end takes about 38 seconds.
But the hourglass doesn't go away for over 2 minutes (I gave up timing
at 2 minutes and it later went away). At first I thought the period
after the barometer finished and the hourglass didn't go away meant that
the program had aborted (I got a "not responding" from the task manager)
and so killed the task, and that meant having to restore rather than
open. Now I find that if I'm patient and wait several minutes for a save
I pretty much avoid the "aborts."
Word Perfect saves the equivalent file in 14 seconds.
I have uninstalled, erased the Program Files directory, reinstalled, and
the behavior is the same.
I would very much not like to split this document into pieces; I want
the index and endnotes to cover the whole thing.
I am open to suggestions or sympathy.
Dick
Hello Dick,
I do agree with you on the file times for OOo in comparison to either
MS Word and WP but there is a difference. The file format used is
both open and the big difference, not a binary file.
The binary file that is used by MSO and Perfect Office are both faster
as no conversion time is needed to transform the files during
save/load times.
On the other hand, if an ODF file gets corrupted, in most cases you
can still recover most of your data. I have never had much success
with doing that in either Word or WordPerfect. Also if I am in a
crunch, I can take the *.odt file, unzip it and grab just the text.
I love WordPerfect and I would use it if available for Linux but it
isn't. I need an application that will work on Linux, Mac and Windows
with no differences between them. OOo is the only one that does this
so far.
In my line of work, an extra 10 or 50 seconds would be a nice break. :)
