Using File Open in OpenOffice will not work unless I choose the "Files of
type" to Miscrosoft Word 97/2000/XP. Then it will open.
I compared the "Files of type" of this problem PC with another working PC
which does not have this problem. The problem PC list 139 files of type with
29 different type of *.doc files. The working PC list 107 files of type with
only 3 *.doc file (i.e. Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP, Word 6.0/95 and WinWord
5). May be that is why when double-clicking in Windows Explorer throws the
error because OpenOffice may be using the wrong converter as there are so
many type of *.doc files in this PC.
How to get rid of these unwanted file types? We don't have and don't need
these applications. How did all these got installed?

Double-clicking in Windows Explorer throws an error. I would suspect
that the association is not quite correct. Please review your settings
as you say opening from the menu does work.
