I am surprised that it has not hit this list earlier.
This is the [users] list :) From: http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html#general "For questions relating to the use of OpenOffice.org (the application). A very popular and effective list." The topic has been raised on (http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=54393) for general discussion, and (http://marketing.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=21735) for discussion pertaining to marketing OpenOffice.org.
MS is afraid of OpenDocument, enough that it is changing the licensing around Office 12 document format and submitting it to European standards body ECMA International. It seems that the pressure over OpenDocument and the move to an open standard was enough to get Microsoft to do this.
As part of its standardization effort, Microsoft will change the license in order to remove "virtually all the barriers" for developers working with the file formats.
http://news.com.com/Microsoft+to+standardize+Office+formats/2100-1012_3-5965443.html If the license allows full access to the code, this is good news all around. If there are still restrictions, go OpenDocument.
Some of the media are using misleading headlines or at best confusing ones. When we refer to code, we mean source code. Microsoft Office Open XML and Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument) OASIS Standard are file format specifications. Note: OpenDocument is already a standard (http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=office) and a truly genuine open-standard at that.
