Yes both work side by side. 2 points:

1. During the OO.o install be cautious when it asks if you want
Microsoft Office files to open in OO.o. If you are just trying it out
leave the options unchecked. As you get into it more you may choose at a
later install to check this option and uninstall MO.

2. OpenOffice.org version 2 has been released and can be downloaded for
free, burned to CD for free, and passed around for free. It is more
compatible with MO hence there is less stress in the transition.
