[users] How do I insert page numbers?

I am running XP SP2 on WinFast 760GXK8MB mobo
with 333 FSB, Sempron 2800, 1Gig DDR,  NVIDIA
GeForce MX 4000. and OpenOffice.org 2.0
My question is about OOo Writer:

How do I insert page numbers? The "obvious" way

insert |fields | page numbers

generates a gray box with "page numbers" written in it,
but no page numbers. Same for "number of pages" and
the other fields.

There is something I am not doing. Please tell me what it is.
