I strongly support open use software, and was happy to read online that OpenOffice allows the use of right-to-left typing, since I am learning biblical Hebrew. But after I downloaded and installed the OpenOffice Writer, although I can click on "right to left" for paragraph setup, it doesn't actually type from the right to the left. That is, the cursor moves to the right margin of the page, but it just types as if right-justify is on - if I start at the beginning of the Hebrew word, the cursor moves from left to right, and the word comes out backwards.. I have enabled Hebrew in the CTL, and selected my BST Hebrew fonts in order to type. I even selected "none" in the western fonts drop-down. How can I get the cursor to actually type each word from right to left, as Hebrew is written? Are there certain fonts I have to use?
You have to use Hebrew Unicode characters. If you use a font that has Hebrew glyphs at Latin code points, that won't work.
