Attached is a gif file showing the screen capture of an actual example of OpenOffice 2.0 Calc with bad data. Column G contains formulae as listed in column I. When I move columns A7 through F7 of row 7 to row 5, Calc alters the formula in G7 from the correct =$G$6-$F$7 to incorrect =$G$6-$F$5 reflecting the data move. Then the totals column gives the wrong totals. My work around is to delete column G, make the moves, then rebuild column G. Unfortunately if I forget the delete, a series of moves can modify the formulae to give a never ending circle of references, and it is then impossible to cancel the OpenOffice Calc application.

I would like to use a totals formula that does not go wrong like this.

Subject: [moderated] How do I lock formulae or change my usage?

I now use OpenOffice (previously I used ClarisWorks which is not supported on Windows any more) to keep track of my bank accounts, credit cards and such. Each line has spending details (date, description etc.) amount and a running total column containing formula such as =E6-D7. When the bank statement arrives I shuffle the lines into a matching sequence. This worked with ClarisWorks but OpenOffice throws a fit. It alters the formula in the running totals column to reflect the moves. Then the total is not correct. Even worse, this can confuse OpenOffice 1.1 into freezing so hard that I can not even cancel it with the little "x" at the top right. I escape using the Windows XP Task Manager to cancel OpenOffice. I tried to prevent these unwanted updates by changing the formula with dollar signs such as =$E$6-$D$7 without success. Now I try to remember to delete the running totals column completely, shuffle the lines, and rebuild the column. Surely this can not be the best way of working. What should I do?
