Thanks. I noticed I did have some crash data, but removing it made no
difference - Writer still hangs when I open the document I'm trying to
edit/print/work on. Writer works fine on all other documents.

Backup's are stored commonly here:
C:\Documents and Settings\<login_name>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\backup
You can of course elect to have a different location for backup's.
If there is a crash, the recovery file will normally be found here,
but the crash data is stored (temporarily) here :
C:\Documents and Settings\<login_name>\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\crashdata
It doesn't seem possible to alter the location of recovery files.
Therefore even if you had change the location of your backup's, the
recovery should still be stored in the above path.
