You don't need the quickstarter to get OOo running. The quickstarter only assists in keeping a portion of the program in RAM memory so it starts faster, when required.
It should be possible to start OOo without the quickstarter (as it does in linux versions). Strange that your not getting a proper error message. How are you 'starting' the application initially, do you have a OOo document to start with or are you selecting it from 'all programs' etc... /paul ps, good to see another NZ'r on the list - there are a few of us here now... pps, remember to keep the list included, there are plenty of others that can assist.
