Thanks for your response as John Viesterg and also that of Roderick
Singleton. My columns totalling formulae are definitely =sum(+c17:c42).
Subsequent inserts are definitely within the column. Singleton's comment
says I should highlight the list and then use "data" and then select
"update". I cannot find "update".
Will write another note re sorting.
Vernon.

D) I also need to learn more about how to use calc. For example if you add
some items to the middle (or bottom) of a column the previously-set total
at the bottom of the column doesn't change! I have had to recorrect such
totals, initially be rewriting them completely, but have since discovered
that merely removing and re-entering the equal sign does the trick. But
such a trick should not be needed at all (It wasn't needed in Lotus)
Looking forward to hearing from you.

What is the exact formula, at the bottom of the column? Is it a
=sum(cell:cell) format? Or are you specifying individual cells? Can you
give a specific situation: where are you inserting a new row and the new
data, and the formula? You should NOT have to re-enter or correct a
formula for a column's total just because you inserted new data, unless
you are inserting the data outside the range of the formula.
As for learning more about Calc, try some of the documents available at
