If I use the windows explorer find function to find all documents
with a specific text line it doesn't spot the *.swx files.

If I change them to MS Word format it still doesn't spot them.
Only when I load them into MS word and save them as MS word docs
does the search function find them.

How can I search a group of Open office documents for a specific phrase ?

Which version of Windows and which version of OOo are you using? The Windows Search function works fine for me in WinXP Pro with OOo2.0.1RC2.

Note: OOo Writer files have the ending .sxw (not .swx as you wrote, but I assume that was a slip of the typing fingers; I do it all the time myself).
