Dear all,

Here's what happened:

I opened an html file in Writer, then hit the PDF button. Writer nicely exported the file in PDF format to my Windows XP desktop but messed up something with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Now when I try to open a PDF file in Acrobat it sends me this error message:

There was an error while loading the plug-in ETpdfSec.api. The plug-in failed to initialize.

The instruction at "0x2d828acd" referenced memory at "0x00000008". The memory could not be "read".

I uninstalled and re-installed Acrobat without a glitch but the problem persist. Re-installing Windows XP is not an option right now and I can't live without Acrobat Reader. If you know anything about ETpdfSec.api or how Writer could cause damage to it, please advise.

Thanks,

Edith

Hello Edith

This is very strange.

On neither of my computers do I have an Acrobat Plug-In called
ETpdfSec.api. (They both have lots of other Acrobat Plug-Ins.) Do a search in your plug-ins folder (on my computer it is c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader\plug_ins) and see whether it is actually there.

If it is, move it to the "Optional" folder (c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader\Optional). Then Acrobat won't try to load it, so the problem should go away.

If it isn't there, I'm stuck, because why would Acrobat be trying to load it?

On a more general note, one of the things I find annoying about Acrobat is that it takes longer to load with each release as more plug-ins are included. But I find that most of them can be moved to the "Optional" folder because they are never used (at least with the pdf files that I come across). So that's what I do, and if I do run across a document that complains, I move the required plug-in back again.

Mind you, none of this explains what this plug-in does, and when it might be required. Or what OOo did to change it (assuming it was OOo). Like you, I tried an internet search (with several search engines) and found nothing.

Hope you get this sorted out!

Andy
