Eventually I solved the immediate problem by anchoring the pictures to 
Page instead of Paragraph. After that they all stayed put. Before I did that I 
actually had an error message pop up -- that some plugin had crashed. I 
can't remember exactly what it said. Sorry, it was finals week and this 
paper was due as well. I was so pressed for time I had to make an 
appointment with myself to go to the bathroom.

I hope they get the debian package for 2.0 out soon. I'd file the bug report 
but since I can't remember all the details it might just lead the developers 
on a wild goose chase. If it continues after 2.0 comes out it can probably 
be fixed in 2.01 or something, especially as it appears it is caused by an 
external utility or plugin, or whatever that error message said.
