The language is a property you can set in the style (paragraph or
character). You'll find it on the Font tab.
In order for spell-checking to work you have to both: Have the correct
language specified in the style (it is possible to set it to "none"
which will also screw you up), and have the language enabled for
spellchecking under Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Writing Aids.
This is actually a very flexible setup as the linguists on this list --
Jonathon Blake and Mr. Kennedy come to mind -- will attest. You can
specify that this paragraph is English and the next is Spanish and the
one after that is Italian. With all three dictionaries installed and
enabled the spellcheck will check each paragraph in the appropriate
language. You can even specify this down to individual words using
character styles.
2. I want to turn off Headers and Footers on the first page of a
document - a simple tick box in Word. How do I do this in OO Writer?
This is handled with page styles in Writer. Word doesn't really have a
comparable concept. Headers and footers -- whether they exist and their
contents -- are a property of a page style. So you just need to use a
different page style for the first page. The built-in First Page style
can easily do this for you. It's also the way to change numbering styles
and restart numbering. For example, you many need a section of front
matter that is numbered in i, ii, iii style and then start the body of
the work numbered as 1, 2, 3.
