No worries, even the so-called experts were beginners at some time ;)

If you can tolerate a mass of emails (maybe 100+ per day) arriving in
your inbox, subscribe to this mailing list and read the questions &
answers posted. You will be surprised how much you will learn and it
will not be too long before you will be able to contribute. To subscribe
go to http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html#general and choose either
a normal (individual emails) or a digest (messages grouped together in
one email) subscription. Alternatively, you can read and post messages
through your newsreader at:
news://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.openoffice.questions
You can of course post directly to this list [email protected] asking
to be cc'd in any reply. A few tips for when you post to this list: (1)
put something meaningful in the subject line of your message (not just
HEEELP!!! ;) (2) ask just one specific question per post (3) give as
much detail as you can about your problem (even if you don't know the
correct terminology) together with your operating system (eg. Windows
XP) and your version of OOo (OpenOffice.org)

Sorry, not enough information here. What happens when you try to open
email attachments? Is there an error message? If so what does it say?

OK, I would recommend that you take a look at some of the documents and
information here: http://support.openoffice.org/index.html I would
recommend the "Getting Started Guide"
http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide2/published/copy2_of_index_html
you will find specific information about spell checking in chapter 5
which is available as a pdf document from:
http://oooauthors.org/en/authors/userguide2/published/gettingstarted/published_final/0105GS-SettingUpOOo.pdf
That chapter will also tell you how to install the Australian
dictionary.

You can always get lots of help and information from the above sources
and this list.
