First off, thanks to everyone who's responded, on and off the list. I've 
been a tied up with other stuff the past couple of days but should have 
time to work on this today.

Since I'm a firm believer in the collaborative advantages of newsgroups 
and mailing lists, I'll quote and respond to the off-list posting here.

As a general principle, I believe they should be editable. Also, to sell 
others on switching from WordPerfect to OpenOffice, I need to match ease 
of use and functionality.

As a practical matter, I usually find myself tinkering with format. Take 
labels used for name tags, for example. I might need to reduce font size 
to squeeze in a long name or split given name and surname into two lines. 
I might also want to print certain names in color or manually add special 
titles to some. I might also decide a different font would look better. 
And so on...
