Perhaps wifes (US English) should be submitted as a bug, as it does indeed accept it as correct.

Andrew,
OOo uses MySpell while SO8 uses the commerical Franklin Proximity. Either they use it to provide a "perceived value" or they think what they have is better then OOo's MySpell. Some of the suggetions OOo can give one the impression that is is "funky" or less professional that the Word or SO spell checkers. Here's my concern. OOo sometimes provides "suggestions" that are not words. Here's an example:

"b logging" for "blogging"

But "b logging" is the sixth and last suggestion, after 5 valid words - I don't see that that is unreasonable - I could be saying:
"I have been:
a conducting experiments,
b logging the results, and
c writing up my conclusions,
and I have discovered that..."

And for "unecessary" (quoted elsewhere) I only get two options: "necessary" or "unnecessary" - "u necessary" is not one of the suggestions.

And then sometimes an invalid word is not flagged. Example: "wifes" is not flagged in OOo but it is in SO. "Wives" is the plural of wife, not "wifes." SO provides "wives" as a suggested replacement for wifes.

Any thoughts on this?

"Wifes" is certainly flagged on my system, and one of the suggestions is "wives" (along with "wife's", "wires" and other sensible suggestions)

So my only thought is that the English (UK) dictionary seems very reliable and useful, and so do the German and French dictionaries (used quite a lot by my children for schoolwork). It would be interesting to know what native speakers of these and other languages think.

Another thought - should this move to the "discuss" list? How does one actually carry that out - does a moderator copy the thread across? I've seen requests that this should happen, but never known how it happens.

Andy
