I guess that you have already tried NeoOffice, not that it really answers your question, but it does solve your problem with out the need to convert to TT

to add fonts to OO.o you need to

Open a new X Terminal and type ./Applications/OpenOffice.org\ 2.0.app/Contents/openoffice.org2.0/program/spadmin

Assuming that you installed in Applications

Click Fonts.
The dialog lists all fonts added for the OpenOffice.org software. You can select and remove fonts using the Remove button or add new fonts with the Add button.
Click Add. The Add Fonts dialog appears.
Enter the directory from which you want to add the fonts. Press the ... button and select the directory from the path selection dialog or enter the directory directly. A list of the fonts from this directory appears. Select the fonts you want to add. To add all the fonts, click Select All.

If you have a classic environment on your machine Font Monger did a great job of batch conversions if you can find it

Take a look at http://fontinfo.net/Font_Conversion.html

I'm using the X11 version of OpenOffice.org 2.0 on Mac OS X 10.4.3. Is
there any way I can easily use OpenType fonts in OOo? I tried

If it's not possible to use OpenType fonts directly, can anyone
recommend a
decent program to convert the fonts to TrueType? I've done it with
FontForge, but I had to convert each variant (e.g. Bold, Italic, etc.)
manually, and that took forever. A command-line-only tool is fine.

I think that there is an application called Fondu which converts various apple
formated fonts to one that can be used by OOo.
