Automatic Formula Bar?

More importantly, Calc doesn't seem to do implicit calculations within a
cell. This is troublesome for me. For example, if I have a number in a
cell, like $100.00, and I want to have Calc figure out the difference
between the $100.00 and a new value that I try to subtract from it, it
doesn't work. Let's say I want to subtract $33.17 from the $100.00, and the
$100.00 is in Cell "a1". As soon as I click on the "=" sign, the $100.00 is
blanked out and then when I enter the "-33.17", Calc thinks it's an
alphabetic value. I don't know how to have Calc do the implicit calculation
(100-33.17) and have the new value, "$66.83", show up in Cell "a1".

Have you tried using the F2 (Edit) key first? In your example, move cursor
to A1, hit F2. Insert = sign in front of the 100, add the "-33.17" after
the 100. Cell contents are "=100-33.17" and cell display is 66.83.
You can also edit in the Formual Bar. If the Formula Bar is not displayed
above your spreadsheet, look at VIEW > TOOLBARS > and be sure Formula is
checked.
