a) I use Debian version (on real Debian/sid; not that extensively so far,
still most of my work is done with LyX) and I haven't met that serious
problems (not that there wouldn't be any) -- it looks to me like some
problem with your formatting.
b) go ahead and install alien and then you can follow installation
instructions how to install RPMs with it on Debian.

Not denying a possible problem with my formatting, but I was using the
same template I'd used for the last 3 versions of OO. Why should it
suddenly choose last night to go wonky on me I can't say.
